What is a Green Car Club?
Car clubs are a relatively new concept in the UK.  A car club provides a fleet of cars which members can book by the hour, day or week.  The aim of the car club is to save you money and take out the hassle of owning a car.  Car Clubs takes responsibility for paying tax, insurance, servicing, cleaning and even petrol is included.

How do Car Clubs work?

First you need to register with a car club in your area.  A joining fee usually applies (and a deposit may also be required) which will allow the club to carry out DVLA checks to ensure you meet their insurance criteria.

Once registered, you will be provided with a Smartcard.  You are then ready to start driving.  Vehicles can be booked online or over the phone which you can then pick up at a set time from your chosen location.

Cars are parked in set locations and come clean, taxed, serviced and ready for use.  The Smartcard acts as your key to unlock and enter the vehicle and begin driving.  Charges vary depending on the provider you choose, but typically you will pay by the hour or for a set period depending on the price structure and your booking.  More frequent users can make additional savings by paying a small monthly fee and benefiting from further discounts.  Included in your booking will be a set number of miles you can travel, with anything additional being charged at a rate per mile.

Your driving information such as pick time, return time and miles travelled will be recorded by an on board computer.  After you have finished using the car, it is returned to the same reserved parking bay it was collected from.  You will usually be invoiced monthly for your use.

Are Car Clubs For You?

Perhaps you have two cars and are considering selling one, or maybe you're looking to sell your car altogether to cut costs as the credit crunch bites.  Perhaps you only use your car occasionally and fed up of having to pay for your car even when your not using it such as insurance, tax and parking permit costs.

We have put together a short section looking at the costs and savings, both financial and non financial so you can see if it is right for you.  Car Clubs have now spread further afield than just London so there may be a car closer to you than you think.  And it's not just infrequent users who might benefit.  After factoring costs such as finance costs and depreciation, a Car Club may be the way forward for you especially if you take advantage of frequent user discounts and book for longer periods.

Car Clubs are also great for businesses, and not just individuals.  They can help reduce travel and fleet costs while you concentrate on your core business.  They reduce the need for capital outlay, lease agreements, parking and other day to day issues of running your fleet such as breakdowns and logging miles and petrol costs.
