Non Financial Benefits of Car Clubs

You have a car when you need it but unlike public transport, you can go exactly where you want, with all the creature comforts of a car such as radio and air conditioning*.  You can go about your business without constraints such as waiting for trains, have access 24 hours a day and you can change your route as necessary.  They are especially useful if you have children or need to drive to do the weekly shop.

There are many environmental benefits too.  For a start it reduces the number of vehicles on the road.  It is estimated between 6 and 15 cars are taken off the road for every 1 car shared.  This is because car club members often sell their car when they join up or put off car purchases.  Car clubs are especially effective for households with 2 cars looking to have just one car.  Club cars tend to be newer with more stringent pollution controls and therefore more fuel efficient.  This reduces carbon emission.  In addition, the majority of car clubs now have hybrid cars available to users which utilise electric motors to power the car as well as petrol.

Non Financial Costs of Car Clubs

Some flexibility is lost with Car Clubs.  For example, the cars need to be collected from a designated parking space which could be some walk away depending on your location, especially the further out of London you go.  Car clubs continue to expand, and now there are more locations than ever with many more planned.

Cars need to be reserved.  Although this can be done online or over the phone, some notice does need to be given and there is no guarantee a car will be available at your preferred location.  There are also sometimes charges for the late return of a vehicle so you do need to be time conscious.

You are also limited by the choice of cars available.  Although most clubs have a choice of cars available you may find the comfort or driving position, for example if you are tall not to your liking.  Some Car Clubs also have advertisement on their cars.  This is great if you want to shout your green credentials but may not be suited everyone.

In addition, some restrictions do apply such as age restrictions (min & max) apply, licence restrictions (eg. points and convictions) plus smoking and carrying of pets are prohibited.
